Preliminary Biographical Notes:
Mrs. Elsie May Morehouse (b.1884 d. 1969) was born Elsie May Andrews on 1 May 1884 in Hints near Tamworth, Staffordshire. The family moved to Doncaster in 1888, residing at 46 Bennetthorpe. In 1908 she married John William Morehouse and moved to 23 Queens Road Doncaster, her address until her death on 16 March 1969. She was an active supporter of the Doncaster Naturalists’ Society, serving as its recorder of Mollusca from at least 1930 to 1968, serving as an ordinary committee member many times between 1930 and 1958 and as a Vice President from 1932 to 1941 and again from 1946 to 1948. She was Hon. Treasurer in 1943 and 1948 and served as President in 1945/46, her Presidential Address entitled “Impressions of an Irish Holiday”. She organised 35 Excursions for the Doncaster Naturalists’ Society, some in conjunction with the Yorkshire Conchological Society, the YNU and Selby Naturalists’ Society.
She joined the YNU in 1926 and served as Conchological recorder from at least 1931 to 1962 and was Chairman of the Conchological Section in 1939, 1940 and 1941. She published at least 109 notes, papers, reviews and Excursion field reports in the Naturalist from 1928 to 1963.
Perhaps Elsie’s last contribution to a YNU meeting was highlighted by Earnest Dearing (1967) who records that the highlight of activities in 1966 came after the Conchological Sections’s meeting at Thorne in October, when Mrs Morehouse kindly entertained members to tea.
She joined the Conchological Society in 1927, being proposed at its 554th meeting at Manchester Museum on 2 March by J. Digby-Frith and J.A. Hargreaves. She regularly exhibited specimens at Conchological Society meetings in Leeds, Manchester and London and published a number of short notes in its journal (see appendix).
The death was announced of Elsie M. Morehouse in the YNU Annual Report for 1969 (Anon. 1970) and although no review of her considerable contribution to Yorkshire conchology was published by the YNU an obituary appeared in the Journal of Conchology (McMillan 1969).
