Doncaster Microscopical Society
An exhibition of the members of this society and their friends was held at the Grammar School, by the kind permission of the Head Master.
There was a good display of microscopes and specimens, microscopes being exhibited by the Rev. Canon Brock, Messrs. Cockill, Brundell, Stiles, Winter, Roberts, Milner, W. H. Stott, Tindall, Matthewman, Jackson, White, and Corner.
Mr. Kirk showed under his superb instrument, illuminated by the electric light, amongst other things, “Melicerta Ringeus,” the building rotifer.
Mr. Stiles exhibited Philodina Rasiola, a beautifully coloured rotifer. Mr. W. H. Stiles microscopic exhibits comprised the cellular development of plants. The “Harmongraph,” made by himself, was exhibited by Mr. Stiles, and the drawings of beautiful curved patterns produced by it were much admired.
Mr. Ballinger sent a number of illustrated, scientific, and art books, also the copy of the Turner Gallery recently presented to the Free Library by Mr. R. Morris.
Botanical science was well illustrated by the varied and interesting collections of dried plants, flowers, and seaweeds shown by Mr. W. H. Stott; geology by the collections of specimens of Mr. T. H. Easterfield; and the lower forms of animal life, Diatomaceae, etc., by a series of drawings by Mr. Kirk.
The exhibition, on the whole, was much appreciated, reflecting great credit on the society and its members.
At the close of the meeting, the following gentlemen were elected members of the society.
Messrs. Furnival, Athron, Percy, Stott, and J. G. Walker.
The next meeting will be held on December 19th.

Presents to the Borough Free Library
Mr. Richard Morris has just presented to the library a valuable book on costume, entitled “The Costume of Great Britain,” by W. H. Pyne, London, 1804. The plates which illustrate the work are 60 in number, they are coloured by hand, and are of great artistic merit.
Following so closely upon Mr. Morris’s other valuable present of a copy of the “Turner Gallery,” made to the library a few weeks ago, this bespeaks a generosity on the part of that gentleman towards the library and the town, which deserves our gratitude.
Another valuable present has also been made to the library through the good offices of Viscount Halifax, as the following letter explains :-
“India Office, 24th November, 1883.
Sir, I am directed by the Secretary of State for India to forward to you the accompanying list of works, which, on the recommendation of Lord Halifax, Lord Kimberley has much pleasure in presenting to the Public Library at Doncaster. The books will be forwarded by railway to your address.
