DONCASTER SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY
The annual conversazione of the Doncaster Scientific Society attracted a large company the Mansion House. The exhibition, which was held in the banqueting room, was divided into sections, which included botany, microscopy, lantern slides, geology, physics, and zoology. In the geological section were fossils from the local coal measures, exhibiting a series of fossils from the base of the permian rocks to the millstone grit. Some 200 different kinds of wild flowers gathered in the neighbourhood were shown, and for the month of October it was a unique collection. That of microscopes was exceedingly creditable, and there was also an excellent show of lantern slides, the exhibitors being Messrs. J. Boetham, H. V. Corbett, M. H. Stiles, G. W. Phillips, H. Baron, T. C. Thrupp. F. A. Jordan, and G. Winter. Messrs. T. W. Woodhouse and H. J. Sharp had cabinet stereoscopes on view. During the evening the Rev. Father Butler, of Chesterfield, gave an interesting lecture on “The taming of garden birds and squirrels,” and the members of the Orchestral Society rendered a choice programme of instrumental music.
