YNU Meeting 4 July at Denby Delf 10.30am

This is our regular meeting with YNU which I organise in South Yorkshire.

It is rather further away than usual, but the nature reserve owned by Garganey Trust and chaired by Jeff Lunn (who gave us a talk last February) is well worth a visit. Jeff will lead the walk round the reserve. It is a hill which slopes down to the north, steep in places, but with steps. It has meadows, moorland, woodland and rough ground – very diverse.

Meet at the reserve at SE 219072 [ no postcode ]

From the A635 Barnsley to Huddersfield road just east of Denby Dale turn south on a minor road (B6115) signed Upper Denby. Go through that village, and then turn right off the main road(effectively straight on). Go past a school and houses into open country. The reserve is on the right through double wooden gates. Park on the right hand side of the road.

The meeting is all day (bring lunch) with a meeting at 4pm at The George in Upper Denby to discuss findings in the reserve.

Joyce

Doncaster Nats visit to Brockadale

Friday 26 June 1.30 pm in the car park SE512173 Post code WF8 3LL

The plan is to see flowers and butterflies in Brockadale.

At the moment there is plenty to see, let’s hope it is not too hot this week causing early drying up!

There will be open meadows and woodland shade, so do bring a hat and plenty of water. (No facilities there).

Marbled Whites are plentiful, lots of Ringlets and Meadow Browns. Many others too. Flowers – Rockrose, Pyramidal Orchids, Clustered Bellflower, Sand Leek lots more.

Paths mainly good, but can be narrow with fast-growing bramble sides. Bare legs might suffer. Boots preferably. Steps downwards, fairly gentle uphill sections. Some seats enroute. Walk length may depend on temperature! We will spend a couple of hours or so.

Joyce

The next meeting is on Wednesday 17th June for a walk from Mount Pleasant Hotel on Bawtry Rd.
Meet at 1.30 in the hotel car park on the A638 about 3 miles north of Bawtry for a walk of about 2 miles.
The leader is Caroline Barrass, she sent me a message to pass on to members.

I had a walk there today to check it out and it should be a lovely afternoon, with beautiful undulating scenery, varied vegetation and hopefully plenty of interesting finds.
The ground is uneven in places.
Various path options so can discuss with the group at the start how far they’d like to walk but suggest the max. distance will be 2 miles.
Butterfly nets might be useful.

Doncaster Naturalists visit to Went Hills Tuesday 12 May 1.30 pm

Our visit is by invitation of the owner, Les Driffield. Parking is limited, so car share if possible.

Travel north up the A1 from Doncaster and leave at the Wentbridge turn off.

Go down the hill and over the bridge. Opposite the Wentbridge House Hotel turn left on a little road. The reserve is after the woodland (on the right) through a gate. Don’t come too early since Les won’t be there much before, and there is not really space to stop on the road.

The reserve is a tiny patch of hillside which Les is carefully managing for its wildlife.

The hillside is steep, and mainly meadow and woodland. The lower part of the reserve was an agricultural field, but has yielded all sorts of interesting and unusual species. Les notes everything he finds and the list of new species is growing. Come along and see the amazing array of life there.
